her food stamps/medicaid benefits were taken from her. Her husband and mine are both construction workers, and since there has been snow, they have been out of work. Well we applied for food stamps in early Jan. Her husband was recieving unemployment, and she didn't report it, which she was trying to slide by on a technicality. However, my husband didn't recieve unemployment because we haven't lived in the state long enough. We fine on money because we had a savings, and I filed and recieved my taxes early. However, I just found out that the food stamp money coming into the house hold (we all live in the same home, temporarily) was for me and my family and only ours. She knew this because she made a statement when I questioned the case worker in a letter regarding how I thought the amount we recieved was minimal for a household of 8 people (both of our families-4 in each), and they ruled it as one family for food stamps, that "well the food stamp money is probably just for your

because of our program violation. I guess I am a little put off, because we pay WAY MORE than our share of household expenses, we had a savings, and we are still paying our own way. It isn't that I wouldn't contribute the food stamps until there is work available again for our husbands, but I just don't think that it is something I shouldn't have known about. Am I wrong for feeling like she was being deceptive, and ungrateful for the help we do try to provide?

You have every right to feel the way you do and the sad part is, is that you are "stuck" in a situation that until things start to look up. Have you attempted any type of conversation with her about this? Did she realize what the consequences would be from her actions? It is pretty selfish because there are 4 children suffering because of this. The rest of you are grown ups and can weather the storms of life. I would suggest speaking with your case worker and see if there are some resolutions to this dilemma. Definitely speak to your sister-in-law. Good luck!

i went through a similar situation last year with my soon to be sister in law, although she was the only one trying to get benefits. There comes a point when you have to stop feeling sorry for even the ones you love, because it becomes very clear that they arent feeling sorry for the fact that you are paying thier way and working hard at it, too! Someone that will hide financial problems from you (while you are supporting them) is no good to have around. I know, it's like throwing them out on the street, and there is always guilt, but they will find someone else to sucker and take advantage of. ask yourself, "What would they do if we weren't helping them/" They would have to take responsibility for thier actions thats what. If they will lie and essentially stael from you and your children, what else would they do to you?

Yes, she should have told you. She is making it difficult for everyone. I'd have a talk with them, and get them to help more with expenses. She needs to get the benefits that will help her family.
