i just bought a new LX rear derailleur after not being able to ride my bike for several weeks. when i hooked everything up and made all the adjustments, then when out for a short test ride, nothing seemed to shift right. when its on the stand and i pedal it, the chain makes a lot of noise. i cant exactly explain it, but it doesnt make the smooth "whirring" sound like it should. i know my cassette is not worn and the chain is fairly fresh also. i just degreased all the crap off the knight before and lubed it.

when im cranking it in a lower gear, i can hear the "rrrrrrrrr" of the chain and see the derailluer cage jiggling a bit. when i shift out to 9th gear, the chain keeps jumping up and down (on the same gear) and doesnt really provide enough grab to be able to pedal consistantly.

i also checked my hanger for trueness. its been knocked around several times and i do need to replace it very soon but i straightened it out as best i can and i still seem to be having all these problems.

might it have anything to with the 20 degree F weather ive been struck with? i put in a new cable and housing when i installed the mech. the guy at the shop gave me a cheap set of Pyramid cables (the spiral wound cable). he said i should use these for now because the cold, dry weather really messes up all the cables.

please help! i havnet ridden my bike in weeks!! im desperate!! i dont have any money to bring in to a shop and i need it for 2marrow!

Trust me on this one... make sure your CHAIN is routed through the der. correctly...

Check out how the chain is run on my bike and see if it looks like yours!

Sounds like your rear derailleur is out of adjustment. Shift your gears so that you're in 1st gear ( smallest gear like 11 tooth ) adjust the H screw high adjustment screw so that when looking from the rear the guide pulley is below the outer line of the smallest gear.
Next shift to the lowest gear ( largest gear ) and repeat the same process using the L screw low end adjustment.
Next make sure your B tension bolt is adjusted properly so the guide pulley doesn't touch the cassette.
Now move to 2nd gear (next to the smallest gear ) with that done crank the bikes pedals and if you hear any noise there is a cable adjustment bolt on the front of the derailleur, turn it one way or the other until noise is gone. That's how to adjust a rear derailleur and should solve your problem.

With the aid of the additional information my guess is that there is something caught in either your cable, guides or your shifter. Possibly even a frayed strand somewhere.(still possible on a new cable.) Or an untidy end in a sheath. The cold weather will make clearances a bit tighter.

sounds like you need to let the screw out a little on your rear derailer to line up the 9th gear...you are restricting it from lining up correctly, and thusly affecting every other gear as you shift, because it all is based off the initial setting.

undo the cable...then turn the screw that adjusts your 9th gear (i can't remember if it's low or high) counterclockwise until it lines the derailer and chain up...perhaps even with th derailer slightly on the outside of the gear...then pull the cabel tight with pliers and tighten it up, and give it a go...if it is still not quite right, turn the thumb barrel adjuster counter clockwise until it is smooth.
