I was prescribed Amitriptyline after 8 months of constant stomach pain. I had taken prilosec, nexium, and a pri-pack for the pain. I was diagnosed with H-Pylori, and treated for it. But the pain went away for a short time(about a month) and then came back again, which is why they prescribed it. I guess my question is, is this a common prescription for stomach pain? I am trying to learn more about it but i would like to know if others have had this problem. Also, i heard it was an anti-depressant.. could i become depressed when i dont have to take it anymore? sorry if this is confusing, i am just tyring to learn more, thanks for any help!!!

I have not started taking the amitriptyline yet. And the H-Pylori was cured, which is why they are confused as to why i am still having the pain.

Amitriptyline is a "trri-cyclic" antidepressant, one of the older kinds of antidepressants used before the newer SSRI and "atypical" antidepressants (such as Prozac, Celexa) were developed. All medications have a primary or "label" use, such as this one for depression. and some have "off-label" uses for other conditions. It means that they have also been successfully used for other conditions than the primary one for which they were developed. Amitriptyline (and other tricyclic a/ds) have been used to treat chronic pain conditions for a long time.

If you were not depressed prior to taking this course of medication, it is very unlikely that you will become depressed once you stop taking it. But it is essential that you follow your doctor's orders and taper down gradually when you eventually stop taking the medication, as the response from another person said.

Amitriptyline is an anti-depressant. It is commonly prescribed for chronic pain conditions. You can't stop taking it suddenly, it does have a rebound effect. You have to talk to your doctor about coming off of it slowly so you don't become upset and depressed. It can make you feel crazy if you just stop.

Amitriptyline is an antidepressant. If you have H-pylori, your doctor would likely prescribe what is called a proton pump inhibitor (Prilosec, Nexium). Do you suffer from depression as well?

Normally, amitriptyline is prescribed for depression or sleeping disorders.

Yes, in addition to being an antidepressant it is used for symptoms such as yours. I had nausea on awakening every morning...10mg of Amitryp did it. I also take Prevacid, but they seem to work well together.

It could be many things. Could be something you eat, your stomach lining could be damaged, stomach virus, anything. That's why you should see a doctor and not wait!
