They don't. They have the least Problems Per Hundred of any car manufacturer if you read Consumer Report, and they are hot on Toyota's heels.

They have MARKETED their car very well. With the 100K warranty, many people jumped onto it. They did not read the small print about the "maintenance schedule" that the owner must endure in order to qualify for any warranty. Some models are better than others but if you look at the age of the car company, they have come a long way in a short period of time. Consider the Delorian and Yugo. Both had potential but they no longer exist. Meeting EVERYONE"S expectations is impossible!
"EVERY" car manufacturer makes good ones and bad ones.
Look at Honda. The first models were a piece of junk. Now, they constantly compete with Toyota for best car line.
If a customer is unhappy, they will tell everyone they know about their plight. A happy customer MAY tell one or two. It just happens that way.

It is the banks that have a very poor perception of Hyundai. The banks set their trade in values so low that it makes it impossible to finance one. Also the days of cars with timing belts are coming to an end and Hyundai has not tried to brake its use of timing belts. The great warrenty is full of escape clauses, and to a point Daewoo is probably hurting Hyundai and Kia. Hyundai has come along way in the past few years and in 5 or so more years with their level of improvement they may become a player. The problem is the American public is very fickle when it comes to new things and once a reputation is there it is virtually impossible to overcome. For many years people went to Hyundai because they could not buy a Honda or a Toyota, this made them like a Cavalier. People did not go to a Chevy dealer because they were looking for an exciting Cavalier, they went there cause they could only get financing on a new cavalier. Hyundai to an extent has been that way. It will change in time, but they are so far behind they will never reach the Toyota or Honda level.

Mitsubishi made Hyundai bad because Hyundai use to use defective mitsubishi engines, the best hyundai cars to get are 1998- to present models, all i have to say is that Hyundais are a whole better than they use to, now hyundai make thier own engines they sale 300k more vehicles than mitsubishi does in US in a year

alot of people believe they have alot of problems and the resale value is lousy. We had a 88 hyundai excel that had over 200,000 miles on it when it was totaled. that car was great, original engine, clutch, no problems. we also own a 05 elantra and had an 05 civic. we sold the civic, very disappointed with it, had alot of problems that were fixed under warranty.

Their entry into the U.S. market was with low end cars. I can't speak for their quality, but offering low end cars and nothing else will gain some ridicule.

Their cars are now in the middle range and from my understanding are rivaling the Japanese imports in quality.

First impressions are hard to overcome. Their initial entry into the US automobile market was less than impressive. I haven't bought one but did consider the Sonata along with the Altima (which I ultimately bought due to familiarity with Nissan cars). I believe Saturn and Kia are facing a similar situations.
