Actually this was started because most mens need to hide their past. However, and as you know, the computer age exposed the new pope-pee. That is how it was discovered he was a Nazi youth. It is either change the name, or hit the road. This fact can not be disputed.

No Pope is obligated to change his name. This is a pious tradition (not Sacred Tradition).

The practice arose when a pagan convert to Christianity became Pope and changed his name from Mercury (after the pagan Roman god) to John II in 533 A.D.

Until then, the Popes kept their original names, from Peter (#1) to Boniface II (#55).

Between John II (#56) and Sergius IV (#142) in 1009 A.D only a few Popes changed their names.

But since Sergius IV, it has been common practice for all Popes to change their name when elected pontiff except Adrian VI and Marcellus II.

With love in Christ.

I cannot think of the Pope's name sorry. There was a Pope whose given name was Mercury, I believe. Since Mercury was the name of a pagan Roman God, he changed his name when he became Pope. The tradition stuck.

The tradition started early in the Catholic Church's history as a check to the personal ambitions of men, that a Pope became a Vicar of Christ, devoid of the sins of the world.
The name change was mean't that a man, could not by pride, keep his own name as a sign of humility.

Many monarchs do, or honestly used to. it is a very historic custom, the historic chinese and Romans both did it. it is suspected that once prince Charles will grow to be king (if he does) he will possibly reign lower than the call George VII, no longer Charles III. in case you've been to grow to be Pope Cloud, you would basically be that - Pope Cloud, you'll in trouble-free terms be Cloud I if some different person grew to grow to be Cloud when you. there is in trouble-free terms been one queen Victoria - if there have been yet another she (like Elizabeth I) would get the I after her call.

God always changed the name of a person when that person was called to a higher purpose (Abram to Abraham, Simon to Peter, Saul to Paul). The pope, and many priests and nuns, change their names to indicate that they have left their old life behind and are now living in service to God.
