Dogs get the most nutrition out of their meals if fed twice or more per day..
The amount of food depends on the activity level of the dog, and the kind of food. ..I feed a premium kibble, and my dogs eat 1/2 as much as they did of a lessor quality..
A good rule of thumb is to feed twice per day, all that the dog will eat before turning away (about 5 minutes)..then put the bowl up until next feeding..
Now, there are some dogs that are bottomless pits, but this is for an average dog..
I feed my dogs all day..leaving kibble out and just keeping it fresh. They are of a breed that does better if 'free fed'.and are in danger of deadly bloat if they eat too much at once...So, the breed really does matter..

You cannot determine what a particular dog should eat because this would be dependent on many variables such as exercise and bone structure. To make sure you're feeding your dog the correct amount you should feel the dog daily. You should be able to easily feel the ribs (not digging through the fat to find it) and the dog should have a slight tuck in the belly and a slight waist. Some dogs like greyhounds or bulldogs will have significantly different structure but you should always be able to feel ribs and not wonder if the dog has any. You should not have fat laying up at the top of the tail. If the backbone becomes too prominant, you are not feeding enough. Generally, however, people over feed rather than underfeed except in true neglect cases.
Keep in mind that dogs are gorge/fast eaters. They are not primates and should not be fed as if they are. They are not animals that should eat throughout the day. They should eat one meal per day. They actually digest their food better this way and feel more satisfied. Feeding smaller amounts throughout the day increases their hunger.

A dogs daily ration of food should be divided into three feedings. How much the dog should eat depends on how much exercise the dog gets. Usually the bags have a feeding guide on them. If the dog starts gaining weight, cut back a little, if the dog starts losing weight add a little. That is of course if the dog is the correct weight to begin with. Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. Feeding a dog once a day can be dangerous, especially with deep chested dogs. They get overloaded and are prone to bloat. Besides, who says a dog gets hungry only once a day? Besides the bloat danger I personally think it's mean to feed a dog just once a day.

If its a young pup under 12 weeks 2-3 times a day. Over that is 2 times a day. Some people are lucky and can put down food in the morning and the dog will eat all day long, no 2nd feeding. As far as quanity read your dog food bag different manufacturs have different feeding quanities because whats in or not in their food. One might say 3 cups per day but another says 2 1/2 per day. Read the bag.

First off, how much you feed a dog is dependent on how many treats you give, how much exercise your dog gets, and the quality of the dog food you are feeding your dog. How much you give your dog will be different from other people depending on your personal dog and what else you do. So...
After selecting a brand of dog food, look at the back of the bag to see what they recommend for your dog's size. You usually want to feed a dog slightly less than that (to account for treats, etc.). Treats should never be more than 10% of your dog's diet. If you notice your dog gaining weight, you will reduce that amount even more. If your dog begins to lose weight, you increase that amount. If you are using a high quality dog food, your dog will eat less because it will take less for him/her to fill up and get the nutrients he/she needs. That's why it's hard to say how much exactly to feed your doggie.
It's best to feed a puppy under 6 months 3 times a day. Once the puppy turns 6 months, reduce feedings to 2 times a day, once in the morning and once in the early evening. Only leave their food out for 20 or so minutes. If the dog is hungry, they will eat during those 20 minutes and if they are not then they won't. Feeding a dog 1 time a day only can give the dog "bloat" because the dog will gulp their food (this can also happen with water). Offering more feedings will decrease the dog's tendancies to gulp their food. Bloat can turn into some medical problems as well. Besides, you wouldn't enjoy only getting to eat once!
I don't recommend free-feeding (leaving food out all day) in most cases because the food loses its value. When training a dog, feeding on a schedule enforces your position as master. Some dogs do ok with free-feeding, others do not. It's best to just stick to a schedule. Dogs prefer schedules anyways.
I feed my 10lb. Lhasa 2 times a day anywhere from 3/4cup - 1cup depending on how much exercise and obedience training we do. I free feed my basset hound/daschund because she only eats when she's hungry (and has a tendency to pick out certain pieces of food even though they are no different)... Neither of them completely finish their food. I would assume your dog would probably get anywhere from 1cup-2cups depending on what you do (treats, exercise, etc.).

I feed my 15 pound dog, twice a day. She gets about 3/4 cup of Eukaneuba split between the two meals. I give her training treats as well. It really depends on the type of dog food. I have found that typically the guide on the package it a little bit more than what is needed.

If you want him to stay 25 pounds, I feed my 10 pound dog a handfull of food twice a day, small handfull. but she also has learned to free feed, doesn't gobble food, so I leave out a bowl and now she just eats when she is hungry. She maintains her weight at 10 pounds for 7 years.

we have a 25lbs dog. we give her 1 cup of kibble throughout the after noon (leave it out for her) since she's at my bf's work all day. and then at home we give her 1 cup as well. usually she'll just have a few mouthfulls throughout the day at work, and then at home she'll eat for a few minutes, then eat more a few hours later, and leave a little for the morning when she wakes up. but she knows that if she eats it all right away we'll give her 1/2cup more, so its not like she's just saving it all cause she's starving. she's 8months old, in really good shape.

i feed my puppy 2 times a day. when she gets older, i will reduce it to once a day.
the dog food bag will have recommendations on food amounts. every brand is different. the recommendations are based on dog age and weight. for example, my dog (40 pound, 6 months old german shepherd pup) eats 31/2 cups a day of nutro max puppy, i divide it to about 1-3/4 cups in the morning, 1-3/4 cups in the afternoon.

after 6 months of age I would say once a day, I've had dogs for years.
none of them were ever fat or weak, i have a big strong german sheppard and he's fed once a day, about 3 cups of dry dog food, in the evening, water is there all day, and he gets an occasional treat.
