I read in a martial arts book when I was a little kid about "Iron Fist Training"

You fill a large bucket with sand, and lightly punch the sand repeatedly for a length of time ever day. Eventually you move on to gravel, and long after that, you can hit concrete.

Repeated strikes to any bone cause it to calcify and grow knobby. You will want to use some lotion to keep your skin from getting really messed up.

Go easy!

William ~
It's your hands were writing about here, your first line of defense. You can not be overprotective enough when it comes to your hands, you have to somewhat baby them while in the gym. I understand what you wrote about "Having problems with them".

You can still shadowbox with no impact at all and if done properly it can be a tremendous workout. Your punching power doesn't come from your fist, it comes from your balance, how you shift your weight while you're throwing a punch, if you pivot properly, if you turning your shoulder while you punching. There's a lot involved in throwing a proper punch and you can practice all of this and much more while you're shadowboxing.

If you feel the urge to hit something make sure your hands are wrapped properly and if you have a couple of extra dollars to spend go to Winning USA. com they sell a glove that has extra padding in the knuckle area that seems to be a favorite if fighters with "Bad Hands" Morales, Gatti, Judah and countless others.

Good luck William.

Santana's is right on point. But let me suggest another exercise that doesn't involve striking. I used this in the Army when I boxed and when I pitched in high school and college. You may be familiar with it since your discipline is martial arts. Steve Carlton the hall of fame pitcher from the Phillies used martial arts training to keep himself in top condition during the baseball season and in the off season. One of his favorite exercises was to fill a waist high bucket with rice and rotate and work his hand, foreman and upper arm to shoulder length into the bucket, then doing the same to work his arm out of the bucket it is a great exercise, that strengthens and creates flexibility in not only your hands but arms also.

as been in aikido, tai kwane do,jujitsu, taijutsu, ninjutsu, shodokan, iron fist, and elegant dragon for 10 years on each,i believe that when you punch with punching bags or something use the dragons palm where you tuck the tip of your thumb at the bottom of your point finger, what it does is stretch your palm muscle and makes your whole fist look like a dragon claw.....without the nail part and the scales, but other than that it also strengthens your fist and makes it harder

learn to punch properly would be the best thing to do first.theres no point trying to strenghthen your hands until youv'e done that.you'll be just doing more damage.do a better style would also help.you need alternative ways of using your hands and your most powerful weapon.the point of your elbow.

best thing to do is hit a bag over and over.... and use those hand squeeze things to work the muscles... just make sure you punch correctly and they will strengthen up!

if they are "messed up" then i would hesitate to reccomend any impact excercise for you because I don't know the nature of any accidents and am not a doctor.

one good low impact excercise that can help stregthen your hands is called milking the dog.

saying "red rocket" while milking the dog is like a kiai. do it and your hands will improve immensely.

knuckle push-ups will help strenghten your wrists and knuckles.

Striking hard surfaces helps, but you need to start with a softer surface like sand and work your way up to harder and harder surfaces. Striking a solid wall without proper conditioning will do more damage than good.
