dogs share many of the same emotions as you, a human, has, but they show them differently.
for example, when you are sad, you cry. when a dog is sad or depressed they sleep all the time and do not eat.
when you are happy, you smile and probably talk a lot. happy dogs tend to wag their tail, smile (can see their lips pull backwards with a half-open mouth, usually when panting), and play.
when you are anxious, you probably pace, panic, have increased blood pressure, etc. an anxious dog will scratch, yawn, etc. (all which are calming signals)
when you are angry or frustrated, you probably pout, cry, yell, etc., a dog will growl, raise hairs, bite, fearfully run away, etc.
don't confuse your dog's normal expression for anything other than just the way he looks!

Pugs do have a sad-looking face. If he plays all the time, he must be happy. Sad dogs lay around all the time and don't want any attention.

Dogs show emotion with their tails and physical actions. Some dogs just always look sad like pugs, others always look happy like labradors always smiling. That means nothing.

Of course dogs have feelings. Haven't you ever seen a dog walking around with his head hung low and his tail between his legs.... It's obvoiusly not happy. But pugs have wrinkles that may make their faces look sad. Watch his actions instead of his expressions.

Yes dogs have feelings and they do show them. When a dogs ears are back that means they are scared or nervous,a wagging tail means they are excited,a tucked tail means they are very scared, when a dog rolls over on their belly that means they surrender and it shows the other dog is dominate.they also tell you how the feel by the way they act. Dogs who Has upset stomachs eat grass to make the vomit or settle their stomachs(depending on the type of grass) Dogs who are very aggressive think that they are dominate, and you should not put up with that kind of behavior. Also they tell you how they feel by their facial expressions, sometimes you can see them smile. Its a very cute thing to witness.the also will tell you by their eyes. That's why dos mouths and eyes are outlined with black. It looks like they are wearing eye liner and lip liner.

Yes...and no.
Dogs do experience differences in mood, behavior and excitement level, but it isn't because they have emotions in the same way that people do.
Excitement is often mistaken for 'happiness' in dogs. Your dog is not thinking 'oh, I'm so happy you're home!!' when you come through the door. The dog acts excited because he has learned that desireable things happen when you come home (i.e. dinner, walks, attention from you). The excitement is the association of your arrival with good things, therefore, the dog is 'happy'.
The same holds true with what people associate with fear, anxiety and anger in dogs. Most of what dogs express comes from instincts or learning. They are perceptive, and can quickly pick up on changes in the mood of the home or 'pack' they are living with. Dogs are social animals in the wild, and instincitively act and react based on the mood of their pack.

They show their feelings through their physical actions, when a dog sits around all day and does nothing, he/she is sad, but when a dog plays during the day, he/she is happy!

dogs eyes generally look sad but they do not show emotion through their eyes.
Their tails are a great way to tell their emotion. If it is up and wagging then he is happy, if it is down and curled in he is sad.
If he plays all the time he is likely happy.

this is going to sound corny...yes dogs are like humans. they show emotions similar to humans. and jst like all humans some dog's facial expressions may seem sad. but they are fine.
your mom is right. if you pug is up and playing, waggin his little tail, he's happy. if you notice him "mope" around or is luthargic....that's when he's probably sad.

why do you think dogs wag their tails? bark at strangers cower in a corner, get excited and run in circles? look with anticipation out a window when their master is due home? bite some people or other dogs, its all about feelings! I am happy,or I am scared, I am exicted , I don't want you here, etc.
it's all about feelings. all animals have feelings, even chickens and pigs.
