I think Vermonts Bag Balm would help. You can find it at most drug stores and in pet stores. It's a square green tin can with a red clovers, and a Bull, on top of the lid. Go to "Vermon's Bag Balm", if you want more information on it. It works on almost anything you can imagine and is non toxic, and both humans and animals can use it.

Dogs can get dry skin. Its not uncommon for a dog to get a skin irritation this time of year. They make moisturinsing shampoos and a few creams that will help. You dont want to let it go because once it starts to itch. The the scracthing and biting starts then you really have problems.

Does your dog lick it's paws, too?(while he/she's lying down, etc)
the weather could be making it worse, but i doubt it's the cause-
my dog has skin allergies and scratched his belly, elbows, and tail base all the time giving himself those flakey spots, even the cortisone shot the vet gave didn't help much.
so i went down to the pet store and bought some Vita-Derm supplement from petsmart, that i didn't think would work, but amazingly it has. it's for itchy skin and shedding, you pour it over their food.
oh, if your worried its mange, for one type there's a trick you can do by rubbing their ears and they'll most likely start scratching. i can't remember it exactly but you can probably search for it on the internet. :)

If it seems to be weather irritation try Bagbalm. I used it on my dog when she was scratching after having her spay done and it worked very well. It is safe for animals.

I agree with the bag balm, you can buy it a pet stores and it works wonders. My friend's Dad uses it on his own hands in the winter to prevent cracking.

Is he scratching himself?? IF he is you will need to bring him to the vet ASAP as the rash could spread!
In the meantime keep him indoors, to prevent him from catching bad viruses again.
Try bathing him too and keep him as clean as possible!

it sounds like dry skin. you could use a moisturizer on him, just as you would yourself. if it doesn't get better, you may want to visit the vet to see if they have any better moisturizers and/or food supplements to help his skin in the harsh winter environment! good luck!
