You won't know. Asking the bank won't guarantee anything. Many banks will NOT even certify a check if you did not write it. (certify means they check for funds, put a hold on the funds and flag the check so they know when you cash it) If you have a check from an unknown for a prize DON'T cash or deposit it under any circumstances...you could face bank fraud charges...many scams do this..

I believe the check itself should have a phone number of the bank that you could call...when you call give them the route number of the check which should be at the bottom right and they will be able to tell you if its a good check

If by good u mean "valid" You should check the following :
1 - Writings : ie signature, date, amount, etc...
2- (most important) security features like hologram, paper quality, bank logo (u can check the bank name on the net).
if by good u mean credit worth, ie u will get ur money, u could ask for the person's credit score

you can call the bank that the check was written on...they should be able to tell you if at that particular time that you call it is good or bad....
Some won't however...just depends on the rules they have in place.. I worked at a credit union, and we were allowed to ... we couldn't tell how much was in the acct. but could say wether or not they had enough to cover the check.

Every check has a magnetic strip which has all the information of your checking account, once it is scanned then they will know if it is good or not.

Sometimes you can call the bank it is drawn on and ask to verify funds on a check--sometimes they will do that and sometimes they won't.

You have to actually take the cheque to the bank and ask the clerk if the cheque will clear before you deposit it.
