once it has been opened? I am still eating a box from Christmas. Do you think they are still OK to eat or should I throw the rest away now?

Find out the brand of chocolates they are and find the website or the date on the box. If they are hand made you can do a search and find out on the web. You didn't mention what kind or brand of chocolates they are so the question is vague.

Store bought Chocolates can last up to at least a year depending on how well you keep them in the fridge. It also depends on their shelf life of how long they have been around? There should be a date on the box if you still have the box? Ones that are hand made with fresh ingredients may only last according to the brand that is specified. But it's what you do with them is what counts.

As long as they are fresh and not too hard. If you put them in the refrigerator there shouldn't be a problem. One way is to use them in baking. You can always use the chocolates to make cookies with them or melt them down and put them in a cake. Find some recipes where as you can recycle those chocolates and be creative. I always find that's one way to make use of chocolates.

Don't know exactly what brand of chocolates they are but if you can find some recipes of that brand. Here's some I found that you can try out. My sister gave me the idea about making chocolate from any of the holidays more useful especially if you have left overs or you happen to buy chocolate on sale.

Depends if they have anything in them that could go off, the more ingredients like nuts and other things, the less edible they will become. If they are individually wrapped you'll generally be fine and pure chocolate should be ok too.

A few months is fine though.

Check the date. Its always a good idea. Then minus about a week or two because of all the air making the chocolate stale. This should give you a rough idea. If they taste good though just eat them as long as theyre well within date.

should be on the box..
i've seen those liquidator's selling chocolate and it starting to crystallize.......and they sell it..it is against the food and drug act..selling that stuff...but they do it...

you should write to the company....
example"
i buy milk and even though the best before date is 14 days..that means..unopened...once it is open..it is open to a regular "shelf life" that is only a few days...

so the "best before date"
doesn't mean "opened date"
the box..should have a web site.... and you can email them...and ask..they may even send you a few coupons to try use the product again.............

so another example : "cadbury" http://www.hersheys.com/products/details/cadbury.asp
