We have checked the grounding wire and replaced one of the units. Both units have yellowed; we had them cleaned near 5 years ago and that did not help. The headlamps disapear after only ten feet. What can I do to brighten the way at night? It is an old car, but it has only 97k miles and the body is in great condition. This is a serious safety issue with me and I would appreciate realistic answers.

Thank you! We did find a cleaner at Autozone that removed most of the yellow & we replaced the bulbs with brighter ones. I can see much better now.

My 87 Mustang had the same problem. I replaced my headlights with projectors, but didn't like the way they looked. A buddy of mine told me about a trick he used on his Eagle Talon. He went to the local auto parts store and got some aluminum wheel polish. I don't remember the name of the brand, but was a name brand and comes in a small silver can about 2 inches in diameter and about 2 inches tall.

I had removed the original headlights when I replaced them with the projectors, so everything I did was with them off of the car. I sanded them with 400 grit sandpaper until all the yellowing was gone. I then used 0000 steel wool to buff out the scratches from the sandpaper. After it was smooth, I buffed it with the aluminum polisher. I did this all by hand, no machine, so it does take time. Then after that I replaced the bulbs themselves with brighter units from the auto parts store. Let me tell you that my car's lights are very bright now, and look really good too, a lot nicer than the cheesy aftermarket projector style headlights.

they actually make a product that supposed to help, I think you can find it at walmart, if not check with most any parts store(advance auto has a web site ), sometimes "buffing helps", but if they are severely discolored , replacement is the only answer, the really sad thing to all this is that when we had "glass" sealed beams" this was never a problem, so much for progress!

Did you try jeweler's rouge? Use a clean soft polishing wheel on a grinder and apply the rouge to the wheel. It shouldn't take too long to get rid of the yellowing. It's a lot faster than trying to do it by hand. Good luck.
