Yes I think they are. Some of them are good things to practice, but when people start simply going through the motions and not believing in what they're practicing the rituals for, that's when they become pointless...

In my opinion....for the most part....Yes. That is why the different religions (even Christian ones) all have something at least a little different from each other. Even where God or Jesus has given the command or shown an example, mankind has altered it to fit their own interpretation. Baptism for example. Baptists and many other religions believe that a person must be submerged in water to be washed clean and "born again" yet other Christian churches use "christening or infant baptism" to wash away sin. Again, just a man's interpretation. People for some reason seem to like rituals, regardless of whether it is religion or something else....Take a look at the academy awards for example and the countless other award programs in the world. Giving medals to heros or to oympians...all is ritual. I think it is for this exact reason that so many people who label themselves Christians or Jews or Muslims or whatever don't come close to having a real relationship with their creator. It is all ritual. Unfortunate. We need to remember it is all about that relationship...not a specific ritual.

Great question. There is evidence of "ritual" behaviour in the animal kingdom, with mating dances and the like. The same structures that produce those rituals exist in the human brain, and are apt to influence behavior in groups of humans as well.
The rhythmic steps of dances performed by tribal groups are a form of ritual, and in many cases, when vigorous enough, can lead to "mystical" experiences.
The purpose of ritual, in fact, is to stimulate those areas of the brain that allow for the possibility of mystical experiences. Song, rhythmic chanting and prayer and the structure of religious services all tend to this end.

Yes they are.
"The performance of ceremonial acts prescribed by tradition or by sacerdotal decree. Ritual is a specific, observable mode of behaviour exhibited by all known societies. It is thus possible to view ritual as a way of defining or describing humans."
