I can understand the cause of sharp stabbing pains, they are because of the muscles that are contracting...

...but what about all those excruciating aches? The way your spine feels as though its about to snap at any moment? The way your legs feel like they've marched 1,000 miles? The way your stomach feels as though its being crushed!?

Why do the ACHING pains occur?

It's nature's way of making us rest at this time. I think they are caused by localised fluid retention and tension in the muscles. Just give in and rest!

I've never had pain in my spine but I used to get achy all the way down to my knees. I used to take 4 Advil at the very beginning of the pain and it took it away for my whole cycle. I now have an IUD and feel no pain at all. You should get one, they're great. I have an extremely light (and shorter) period now with no pain at all. PLUS, I don't have to worry about taking a pill every day for 5 years!

By the way, as to what causes the pain...I have no idea. :)

46 years and have been fortunate in comparatively light pains.
Bananas contain potassium and magnesium that help.
Read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies.
Trigger points are knots in the muscles making them tight which in turn causes them to apply pressure to nerves and other places.

You should be checked for endometriosis. Not everyone has those pains. I'm one that does suffer and did nothing about it for so long and found out I had endometriosis all over. Too many people choke up painful periods as just painful. It could be something serious.

Yeah, I'm with you on this one - it feels like your insides are being ripped out by a man with a chisel ...

I guess it's good that we are able to carry children, but it's a shame it's has to be so darn painful the rest of the time.....

It could be something serious, or not so serious, but leading to serious. I would talk to your Dr. if I were you. It could just be water retention, though. Or just a vitamin deficiency. Try taking a multi-vitamin like Centrum. And go for your yearly well-woman check up.

It sounds as though you may be having excessive pain, see you ob/gyn and see if you are having problems, not everyone feels the pain you feel
