Absolutely, they can work. Being away from the person really helps clarify your feelings for each other. Maybe you learn that you can live without them and they are not really the one for you. Or it might help you realize that yes, you really should be together. If it's meant to be, long distance will not destroy an otherwise good realtionship.

I married my husband after living 2000 miles apart for two years. Now when I look back at the long distance part of our relationship, it was a really fun and romantic time. We'd spend a lot of time IM'ing and on the phone, and we had great converstations. We missed each other and longed for each other, sent each other little gifts and cards, and that was kind of nice! And when we did visit each other (twice a year), wow, that was just wonderful.

Good luck!

They can be the BEST, if both of you agree on the ground rules and you aren't jealous people. The passion is heightened by the long distances and periods spent wanting that person...of course, you have to be mature enough to realize that you can't see each other at the drop of a hat and that you'd better be ready to either be willing to see other people in your absence or both state that you want it to be monogamous outright; otherwise it won't fly.

I live in Cali, and I have a friend who's boyfrirend lives in England. They have been "going out" for more then a year and he's planning on coming over here this summer. They can work, but it takes a lot of trust, and effort on both sides.

they can but it takes effort on both sides with phone calls, emails, visits, cards, flowers and all the usual things that people take for granted in normal relationships you have to double them in long distance relationships because you dont get to see that person and you have to be understanding and patient and know that you each have seperate lives in different places but you have to work to make time for each other and if youre not willing to do that then its not going to work. but it can... my brother moved out to kansas city to be with his girlfriend and now they are getting married. so it can work.
