In Hindusim the triad of Gods consisting of Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Shiva the destroyer as the three highest manifestations of the one ultimate reality. This is a concept that holds that God has three aspects, which are only different forms of the same one God. The three aspects of God, or "Parabrahman," or God's personae are as Brahma (the Source/Creator), Vishnu (the Preserver/Indwelling-life) and Shiva (the Transformer -Destroyer/Creator).

Though all the three trimurti's are males, the hidden symbolism emphasizing female energy is not difficult to understand. Brahma was able to create because his consort is Sarasvati, the goddess of speech and learning. Similarly Vishnu's consort Lakshmi, is the Goddess of beauty and fortune making it possible for him to preserve the universe; and Durga, is the consort of Siva.

The Trimurti itself is conceived of as a deity and artistically represented as a three-faced human figure. Brahma is no longer as relevant as He once was in Hindu writing; some would say that focus on the aspect of the all-in-one Devi or of Shakti, the Divine Mother or God's Power personified, has replaced focus on the Source/Creator as Brahma.

Now comming to the popularity of these three murties.Brahma is less worshiped and in fact a couple of temples only exsist for him.

Vishnu's followers are vaishnavites and the worship only Lord Vishnu. Shivas followers are called shivaite and they worship Shiva as well as Vishnu.

Lord Brahma is considered the custodian of the Vedas - the oldest religious scriptures. However, he did not create them, but received them from Vishnu and Shiva. As the mantra goes - "Guru Brahma, Guru Vishnu, Guru Maheshwar" - are the three original and primary dispensors of Vedic 'Dharmasastras' that form the core of Hinduism.

Both Vishnu and Shiva are popular for the reasons stated above.-

Brahma,Vishnu and Siva are manifestations of the same Absolute Truth, in order to acheive different purpose, and Vihnu is most popular due to the reasons stated below.

Srimad Bhagavatam(1.2.24),states that
"Firewood is a transformation of earth, but smoke is better than the raw wood. And fire is still better, for by fire we can derive the benefits of superior knowledge [through Vedic sacrifices]. Similarly, passion [rajas] is better than ignorance [tamas], but goodness [sattva] is best because by goodness one can come to realize the Absolute Truth".

Lord Brahma is in charge of the mode of passion, Lord Siva that of ignorance and Lord Vishnu is in charge of goodness. Among the three modes of material nature, the mode of goodness elveates one to the spiritual platform. From the Bhagavad-gita, we understand,"The manifestation of the mode of goodness can be experienced when all the gates of the body are illuminated by knowledge".

From the Srimad Bhagavatam, we further come to know that, "The transcendental Personality of Godhead is indirectly associated with the three modes of material nature, namely passion, goodness and ignorance, and just for the material world's creation, maintenance and destruction He accepts the three qualitative forms of a, Vishnu and Siva. Of these three, all human beings can derive ultimate benefit from Vishnu, the form of the quality of goodness.

Lord Sri Krishna says in the Bhagavad-gita,"Whenever and wherever there is a decline in religious practice, O descendant of Bharata, and a predominant rise of irreligion—at that time I descend Myself. To deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to reestablish the principles of religion, I Myself appear, millennium after millennium".

Therefore, Krishna or Vishnu comes Himself in His own form and other various incarnations to reestablish the principes of religion.

All three have their own cults, but the cult of Brahma is more popular, at least amongst educated/upper-class Hindus, because he is more similar to the Judeo-Christian-Islamic deity and therefore seen as more 'logical'.

What I really like about them is there all calling us to transcend them, where the god of the OT says you can not go beyond me, I'm it. Sad indeed, what is even more sad is the people "who live there lives in chains never knowing they have the key".
