I have heard some disturbing things about the whole Mahdi/12th imam character in the Shia half of Islam. Some people say he is a 5 year old kid who's supposed to hold more power than Jesus, and that he's believed to still be alive even though he vanished over a millenium ago. According to some rumors Ahminejad, al-Sadr, Nasarallah and crew all believe that its their religious duty to "speed up" the battle of Armageddon because it will summon this Mahdi kid back from wherever and he'll lead Muslims to victory over everyone and everything.... aka Shiite Islamic World State. And I'm sure just about everyone in the world would agree that the most holy and fought-over city in the history of western civ is Jerusalem, which also happens to be the capital of the only Jewish world state... which happen to be the race Ahminejad seems particularly interested in "Solving."
Do Shias believe in this, and if so, has the Cold War idea of "Mutually Assured Destruction" gone straight down the toilet?

We must take those who believe this to be absolute truth VERY SERIOUSLY. These people not only 'believe' in this 12th Imam, their whole life is centered around this belief.

We can not reason with these people, because We are INFIDELS to them. They say whatever they want to our faces, as in when they are getting interviewed; but that does not stop them from telling lies. In their opinion telling us a lie, is not really a lie; because once again we are "infidels".

All those people in this country, who think that we can negotiate with individuals who strongly believe in the 12th Imam are DELUSIONAL. They do not and will not 'negotiate' with people they feel are unbelievers or infidels.

Yes, I think they're more than rumours. The Mahdi is "supposed" to arrive during a great war between Islam and Israel. Even more interesting is how this fits in with the biblical prophecy. Jesus is supposed to arrive at this time also, when Israel is surrounded and it looks like they will be destroyed. But Israel will never be destroyed as God promised he would restore them and preserve them just as he has done. They want to destroy Israel because that would make the bible a book of lies. Sorry I can't answer your question. I don't know more than you about the Mahdi character, but I'm fascinated by all this as well.

I think it's kinda like the second coming of JC. A lot of superstitions borrow the same ideas from each other.
