Sure it can! :) I'm in a customer service oriented job position and I talk about utterly random things with each individual customer, sometimes that's colds, sometimes recipes, or kids, nature, local utility companies, the possibilities are endless, and I'm happy to say I've made a few friends because of that - I'm not allowed to give them my contact info, but that doesn't stop them from giving me business cards and such for friendship past work. There are also a few repeat customers who will purposely come to me despite that meaning a longer delay. If you're a friendly person, the subject of conversation isn't what matters, it's your energy, your personality that makes the difference. :)
