Different people define it different ways.

Hooking up, in my teenage years, was about having sex. "Hooking up" was just the slang for going to bed with someone, usually a one night stand at a party or something similar.

Hooking up, nowadays, can be used a bit more loosely. I've been startled by teenagers who use it to mean "getting together" like for a mall trip, as well as the sexual meaning of the 90's.

Context is everything with this term!

Hooking up can be acceptable if you don't regret your actions the day after. For those who convince themselves that love is not for them...hooking up could be an option but usually people who are in search of a stable consistent relationship won't "hook up" ya know...

The way I understand it, and this seems to be the true definition, is that hooking up is bumbing uglies, knocking boots, horizontal bopping. The old fashioned one night stand.

That's open to interpretation... I usually use it as kissing, NOT having sexual relations. My friends understand it but if talking to someone else i do make it clear no sex was involved in the 'hook up'!

My interpretation of "hooking up" is simply to connect with someone else and spend some time with them, like going out on a date.

Nowadays, "hooking up" has come to include sexual intercourse.

It has evolved from the terminology formerly used in Broadway classics, and I quote (from Cabaret):

Fooling around is the same as messing around, but without dinner.

hooking up is often a reference to sex.

But you can hook up with your friends and go see a movie.

if a guy says to you, hey lets hook up at sallys party and go out for dinner afterwards.. i dont think he means your going to do the deal at the party...

its all based on who's saying it and what context they use...

I hooked up with a few of my guy friends to watch the superbowl. there was nothing sexual involved whatsoever...

hooking up is just "getting together with someone" so if you get together and kiss that could be considered hooking up. or if you get together and have sex that could be hooking up.... it can be used either way.
