The question arises out of the salmonella outbreak from peanut butter. I say a peanut butter factory makes peanut butter all day every day. My co-worker says they make peanut butter today and something else (perhaps like mayonaise) tomorrow.
Settle the bet, who's correct?

It depends on the particular factory. Some only make peanut butter. Others might make other products as well.

It may be true what he says. For settling the bet, go visit a factory.
I guess see the brand. What all that brand makes. So they make all that in the factory. Could not be just peanut butter all year round.

Most plants process more than one food, but they are usually similar. For instance, ConAgra who makes the peanut butter in the news right now, asks people to check the PRODUCT Code, which is not a lot number, but a number for a specific product. If the company only made one product, there wouldn't be a need for a product code.

I've been in the stainless industry for over a decade and I can tell you that the equipment that they make peanutbutter with is very specific to that process alone. Now it is possible that Con Agra in georgia does make other products in the same building and some cross contamination can occur but, your answer is no. The peanutbutter line makes just peanutbutter.
