He called us both numerous times, asking us to check all our silverware AND empty out our garbage to see if the knife got sent home with us somehow.

We couldn't find it anywhere, but he insists to this day that we have it somewhere. He just won't let it go!

The knife has no sentimental association or financial worth. Just your cheap $20 set of knives.

I tried to turn it into a joke. He came over my house a couple weeks after the knife went missing, so I took every knife and butter knife I owned and placed them up and down a long hallway.

He laughed at the time, but he STILL brings up his missing knife.

Is this a bit obsessive of him?

Should I just go buy him a new set of knives, even though I didn't lose it? He needs to let it go somehow.

yeah buy him a new set, although given his behaviour, he'll be appeased only for a limited time. the missing knife will keep popping up in conversation every now and then for the next 10 years.

Well Yeah!! I think you should buy him a new set. But I also think you should get him one exactly the same or almost the same as the one he lost, or maybe you can just buy him the one knife he is missing. Maybe then he will drop it!!!

That's too bad, he probably put the damn thing somewhere and forgot where. I would buy him a new knife and say, "Here, I didn't take your damn knife, but I'm sick of hearing about it. Take this and let's never speak of this again!" Say it jokingly, but make sure he understands that you are also serious.

Have you asked him why he is so concerned about this knife? I guess you could buy him a new one before you ask him about it.

that's pretty strange. maybe buying him some new knives would be a nice gesture, but it's weird that he still brings it up...
