Think back over the things she's told you, and see whether she hasn't (consciously or unconsciously) given you any great hints about what she'd like: a certain book, CD or DVD; tickets to a show; dinner at a certain restaurant or something.
You will earn BIG POINTS (and not frighten her off) if you can demonstrate that you've been paying attention to the things she's said. That would be far better than any random suggestions you get from people online who don't really know either of you.
Good luck!
P.S. If you were a new friend of mine, I wouldn't be expecting anything, and chances are she's not expecting anything, either...which means (if she's a nice person) she'll really appreciate anything you thought to give her.

I would suggest the gift be somewhat impersonal. No jewelry or high priced items. But, on the other side of the coin, I would not do a gift certificate. Maybe a concert or play with dinner. Something a little different from the run of the mill date, but still a date.
Good Luck.

Get her some movies and/or some nice things that won't make her think you like her too much. Like a book or a nice teddy bear or maybe some clothes! I know you will find the perfect gift for your friend. Tell your friend I said "Happy Birthday!" Good Day!

I would expect something like a 9ct gold chain or a bracelet nothing too expensive or fancy. Simple and stylish costing around £30- £40.

How new is the friendship? My best guy friend took me to breakfast for my birthday. It was nice to sit and talk and have coffee. A nice card is sweet, too. And well, one single flower is a sweet I'm thinking of you!

Get her something she will like. So if you know she likes lavendar scent for instance, buy her a bath/gift set. If she likes to read and you know what type of books, pick one, or get her a book-light or something. If she likes music, and you know her preference get her a CD.
If your in doubt you can always get her a gift card, but I'm thinking you want to pick something especially, so try one my suggestions.
If she likes you and your buddies, she won't be too critical of anything you give her anyway.

How about taking her to a nice dinner, or maybe get her a nice bottle of wine. If your lucky, then maybe she'll invite you over to drink it. If that's too forward, how about a gift certificate to a bookstore, or to the salon where she gets her nails or hair done. Think something personal, rather then expensive.

I would rather have gift cards. That way its something tangable but not cash. You can wrap it like a present. AND if you get it from a store she likes she knows you pay attention to what she likes but wanted her to pick out something special.
Candles are nice too. I dont know too many women who dont like candles. Picture frames? I LOVE picture frames.

Flowers, because that can be a friend/boyfriend thing. A guy friend of mine got me flowers for my bday and I thought he was such a sweetie. Try to stay away from red roses though.
