Perhaps you should come and spend a day working in a psychiatric unit, working with young people who have quite frankly messed their lives up through taking cannabis.

I'm fed up of people having such a relaxed attitude to cannabis. It can cause severe paranoia, anxiety and more worringly trigger depression or schizophrenia, if a person is already biologically predisposed to such a condition. Sadly, you won't know if your predisposed until you take these drugs.

I don't doubt that alcohol isn't a dangerous drug, but just because another drug appears to have less immediate negative consequences that doesn't make it acceptable to legalise it. Like you imply, we have got enough problems in this country as it is as a result of alcohol, why on earth would anyone want to make MORE problems? The NHS spends millions on treating drug and alcohol addictions each year, and yes, revenue raised from the duty that is put on such substances is ploughed back into funding treatment for things such as lung cancer etc, but long term psychological problems cost a lot of money too; as a figure, it is estimated that depression and anxiety cost the economy as much as £12billion a year, a bill of £7billion (source: LSE) is picked up by the taxpayer. The tax-treatment cycle is just a vicious circle, so why make it bigger?

the smoking ban is the worst idea ever.so people dont want to inhale second hand smoke i dont want to inhale exhaust gasses but i have no choice.
geting high is the only good use of any plant.im sick of all the ads sayin it damages your brain thats cr*p. alcohol is so much worse than a nice joint or a bong.alcohol breeds violence!as anyone that smokes weed knows if u have a joint you cant be arsed to move let alone start a fight( unless you have the munchies then moving is a priority)they cant tax weed it costs too much anyway they should just tax fat people as they eat more than the rest of us.and there are more of them.especially in america.weed is one of gods finest creations and i will always enjoy a lovely spliff when i get home from work. its a great way to wind down.if i can no longer smoke a *** at work i will just take my bong!!

whatever your position on the morality of smoking pot may be, from a financial p.o.v., the gov. could make a pretty penny if they would legalize it for other than medicinal purposes. having tried just about everything under the sun, legal or not, i would rather sit home and smoke up than go out and get drunk. yes, people do stupid things in public when they're high, but they do it when they're drunk, or mad, or crazy. i think it's too simplistic a view to equate smoking herb to drinking or doing other drugs. it's legal to comsume alcohol, and people go out and drive drunk and kill other people because they can't contol their drinking, yet other people have enough self-control to not get completely hammered, or enough sense to not get behind the wheel. i think you'd find the same true for smoking weed. there's always going to be those idiots that do something stupid, while the majority of users just chill. in any event, if you choose to smoke even though you know it's illegal, don't go harping around when you get busted. as for how healthy it may or may not be, well, how healthy is it for you to step out the door these days and breathe? i think the argument that smoking weed is bad for your health is kind of a useless tactic to get people to not do it. might as well ban all gas burning vehicles if you want to do something for the general health of the populace. no more america bashing, please! we're in the same boat on this issue, for the most part. we don't like our old fart lawmakers, either !

legalize it.

economically, you save the billions that are spent each year hopelessly fighting marijuana use and profit from taxes. take the money from drug lords and terrorists and spend it on social programs like drug rehabilitation, etc.

socially, legalizing marijuana might actually reduce its popularity. if it's legal, it's not as attractive. it becomes a social choice, like smoking cigarettes, rather than an act of protest. further, it would be a lot more difficult for kids to get a hold of if other kids weren't selling it.

legally, the government could use the resources wasted on fighting marijuana in the streets and courts and use them to fight real drug problems like the crack epidemic. after 80 years, it has not been vanquished in america. in fact, it's use has grown. it's being slowly decriminalized in nearly every state in the nation. a massive overhaul of america's war against drugs is forty years overdue.

personally, i believe marijuana is a powerful substance. for some people it is a blessing and a curse for others. it is the government's responsibility to control it's use, but an all out ban is a foolish approach.

I agree.....you dont hear of cannabis related domestic violence or people being high and disorderley. Legalising it would save the police the wasted time and effort of tracking down and arresting people for such a petty 'crime'.

If it became legal I would grow my own rather than pay the high taxes

Watch the taxes rise.!!! Would like to think that cannabis if made legal, would solve the tax being put on everything else. I agree it should be legalised even if it was for Medical purposes as it cannot be any more dangerous than other drug using, alcohol, or smoking.

I may enjoy a fine brandy now and again, but at least weed hasn't wrecked my brain to the point where I am incapable of typing out a proper sentence - especially one with a spell checker available.

I'll stick with a drink, thanks.

i totally agree and so does half of society, but, im so sorry to say, that if the government gave us this right, they just wouldnt look "proper" so thats the ONLY reason it hasnt come back, it was once legal and i do believe that once us younger generation weans out all the "old people" that it will be legal again, I do NOT like to drink, drinking causes stupidity and carelessness...but its sad i cant do whatever i want to my own body in a "free" country. if we were actually allowed to do what god gave us, well then, this would be a free a country, and thus not america.
