I was 21 and had them done by an oral surgeon. It was not at all painful that way and the little swelling went away in a few days.

you more than likely get swollen cheeks...because the membranes securing the teeth in place are literally torn free of the root surface. Most dentists reccommend the removal of all four wisdom teeth as the same time, however having had mine removed individually I feel this local anesthetic is best. To have them all extracted together is done under a general sedation procedure. All together leaves one unable to eat properly for several days. On the other hand one at a time allows you to mastaciate food on at least one side.

You 'should' be put under... I think it would be traumatic to have those removed while awake. Your face swells from the trauma.
I realize that everything I've said sounds scary but as I posted in another similar question, the alternative (leaving them in to collide with your other teeth) is much much worse and more painful, and longer lasting. In a few weeks after the extraction, you won't remember what the big deal was.

I was 31 when I got mine pulled. Some people have told me that is is less traumatic the younger you are. I only had two pulled, had both a local anesthetic and laughing gas and still was pretty painful. I looked like Marlon Brando in the Godfather for about a week.

You get them pulled when they cause problems. That may be when you are 18, or 81. I have a friend, 57 years old, who just had one pulled, last summer.
I have had all of mine removed (by the time I was in my early 20s), and I only had local novacaine (but lots of it).

My experience was pure horror. Good luck with that. I'd rather deliver a baby again as to have teeth pulled.
