My dog thinks the couch is "his" now. he won't let us anywhere near it and starts growling. we're trying to teach him that this is bad, but he doesn't really get it.

You sit on the couch and kick him off. My dog did the same thing and would pee on the couch after company would leave because she would be marking her territory. You have to make sure he knows that it doesn't belong to him or else you could be in the same situation.
What I did was get her a blanket and only let her lay on that on that part of the couch. When company would come I would put the blanket on the floor with her toys on it. When the company would leave, would put the blanket back in the same spot.
I don't know why, but it worked.

i have a cockapoo too!! Have you ever watched the dog whisperer? Well, he has a LOT of really good tips. First off, you need to show him who is the boss. He apparently thinks that HE is the packleader, and he's not. Whenever he starts to growl, quickly say"NO!" and tell him to get down while pointing at the ground. remember, you don't want any physical violence or mental, but you need to show him that you and your spouse are the boss. If he doesn't, sit down. Just ignore him and if he starts to try to bite push him into the couch and hold him by the neck while holding him down. Also, when doing this say a certain word that you will use whenever he does something wrong. I say "Shu." My girl doggy know that when I say this she better not continue growling or being territorial. But remember, you aren't trying to choke him or hurt him in any way. This step may seem a little harsh to you, but it is exactly what the dogs do in the wild. And plus, you have to remember, that your dog has a brother, the wolf. That is the territorial side coming out of him.
Hope this helps, This is what Ceaser says on the dog whisperer. You might want to try and watch his show sometime. It might help you in more ways than one.

Grab it by the back of the neck and pull it off. You're not being aggressive, you're being dominant. If it bites you then slap it in the face.
