Kodak Easyshare cameras are simple (great for first time users) and offer a great quality product! I've had 2 so far (I actually still have the old one, my husband uses it). And you can get a 5 megapixel camera (the one I have) for around $100! I read up on these too before purchasing and I heard nothing but great opinions of any of these cameras.

Optical zoom is everything. Digital zoom is crap. Dont spend too much if you plan on getting one down the line someday. Digital cameras get better and cheaper really quick. More pixels the better. It's more or less, you get what you pay for.

I would recommend Nikon or Kodak. They're cheaper than the competition but they have an enormous amount of history behind them, thus you can hardly go wrong no matter what model you buy.

I own a kodak 875 8 mp and am really happy with it

i recommend a canon camera. i have had mine for years and it is great. im thinking about getting a new one and i suggest a Canon PowerShot SD800 IS for about $350 and it has great quality and durability.
