I have a long coat chihuahua that is now 13 wks old. In the past I've had smooth coat chi's and their ears were up by 3 or 4 months. I realize that teething has an effect on their ears but does that also include long coat chi's? She is teething quite a bit and chews everything in sight! Her ears are very, very furry and are currently only half way up. I was wondering if the extra fur has anything to do as to why they are not standing up yet? My concern is mostly because her mother's ears aren't firmly cropped although her daddy's are and he comes from a 5th generation of champions. Also, does anyone know if their skulls change as well as time goes by? At first she had a very round apple head and a short nose but I see that it's changing somewhat as well. Her jaws aren't as prominent as before and is in becoming a little more triangular. Is she just going through typical changes?

I have a chihuahua aswell, but my baby is 5 months old. The ears will start to perk up in time.. .infact my dog has them up, and at times one might go down. Too cute! But soon they will be up fully. Just like children some take longer to do things then others, so you can't give yourself a set time limit with this. You will also have to keep in mind that you said the mom's ears aren't firmly cropped... so the pup just may have her genes.
As for the changes, these are normal. There are a lot of things happening, just like the open spot that is on the skull... in time it closes up, but might not do that completely.. so be very careful with their heads. Their body is still changing and taking shape.. and it will take a few months to see how they completely develop.

They'll probably go up by the 5 month mark, some dog's have a harder time with that.
they may even stay half way up.
but, if you definitely don't want that to happen, wait until the puppy's a little older and you could try ear raising techniques like breeders' do for german shepherds or corgis(big difference, i know, but it could help)
look up ear taping, but talk to your vet first- i'm not really sure if it could help such a small dog.
i wouldn't wait until she/he's 6 months old though, by then it'd be too late to help any.

If the ears don't go up after 5 months, chances are they won't. That's ok though, unless you intend to show her. Sometimes, massaging her ears will help, but she's only 3 months old, and she has time yet.

Training your dog will be a huge part of your interaction with him for the first few months. Learn here https://tr.im/BIncI
This includes housetraining, leash training, obedience training, socialization, and problem solving. In addition to providing your dog with needed skills, this time will also be a great opportunity for you to bond with him. Take the time to really get to know your pet while training him and a loving relationship will easily develop.

Dogs do ****NOT**** "teeth" at 12 wks.!!!

Prick-earred dogs ears should be standing BEFORE 12 wks-unless they are just PET-CRAP,which sure sounds like yours!

Chihuahua's ears are NEVER *CROPPED*!!!!
