The H&K G36 rifle and MP5 series are highly regarded, but the FN MAG is the world's most popular machine gun.

People who have shot any of these weapons, your input will be considered for Best Answer... I myself have only fired FN MAG.

Probably boils down to personal opinion on the most part. For people who have experience with both manufacturers' weapons, they will be able to formulate an opinion based on comparing criteria such as reliability and accuracy. Otherwise this is pretty much a popularity poll.

First off, I have fired:

HK USP, VP70Z, MP5, SL8, HK91.
FN PS90, Five-SeveN, FAL.

You must take into consideration that not only does FNH produce firearms, but also heavy armament and equipment, and is also an engineering corporation. Whereas, HK is much more specialized and focused on firearms. This puts both companies at an advantage, in different ways...and makes it harder to compare them.

I like HK firearms because they use very standard and intuitive designs, cartridges, materials, etc. I like FN because they are incorporating progressive designs, cartridges, materials.

Since both companys' firearms are reliable, tough, well made, and renowned, I will have to say that I prefer H&K because they use mags, cartridges, parts, and accessories that have become abundant and standard. FN is now pushing new and wierd proprietary cartridges, parts, plastics :-0, etc.

I say that HK is better because it is sticking to the time-proven standards in design and quality. (even the XM8 is more traditional than some FN guns.)

Who knows, in 10 years, maybe time will show that FN's unique concepts will become the standard...my opinion could change.
But for now, it's HK ALL THE WAY!

I don't have much experience with FN Herstal outside of the M249 SAW, however I have extensive experience with quit a few versions of the MP5 as well as the G3A3, G41 and MSG90. Every H&K firearm I've used are superb weapons, durable, accurate and reliable. The SAW is an great gun too but it a machine gun and is prone to jam when fireing bursts less than 5 rounds and being a machine gun accuracy is a non-issue.

There is nothing like an MP5 for CQB. NO kick, with a mag long enough I could spell my name in script. I have seen (but never fired) FN's assault weapons, just to look at them they seem they would be alittle awkward and odd to use.

fraz-anyone who uses a machine gun that fires from the open bolt position during CQB is holding a death sentence, you need a weapon that cycles starting from the closed bolt possition to get the "first fire fail safe", if it jams it will be during the cycle after the round is fires, a machine gun could jam without releasing a round

I own a HK P7m8. It is a fine piece of work.
I have shot the MP5 a great deal, as well as the G36. Top notch.
I am not familiar with FNs products, but I can definitely say the HK stuff is excellent.

Have yet to fire an FN, however, I had a H & K P2 and it was probably the best combat service weapon ever. Now I have a Glock, which can be field stripped an cleaned very quickly. Guess it just depends on your preference.

Ask the taliban, although they will only say AK47 coz thats all they can afford. My personal preferenced machine gun for CQB would have to be the MINIMI, However, for destruction all round, it has to be th Browning .50mm.

(Sorry, i just realised i never actually answered your question., but have my thoughts anyway)

I'm an H&K man myself, never had an issue, had v. high accuracy.

Can you name some criteria to consider, other than personal opinion?
