It probably comes from the water you're using to wash your hair. It must be "harder" than the water from the place you've just moved out. You could invest in a magnetic softener that would be fastened to the plumbing. You could also try a vinegar rinse as your last rinse after shampoing (mix 3 tbsp of cider vinegar to 1/2 a quart of water). The smell disappears quite fast, but if you still don't like it try diluting a few drops of essential oils in the vinegar before mixing it with water.
Hope this helps.

Mine did the same thing. I go back to Michigan several times a year to be with my family and when I get back home my hair becomes soft and curly again. I come back to Vegas, I have to wash it separate, I have to wear a shower cap and still moisturize, but my whole life before Vegas I had oily hair. It is dry here, but there is something defiantly in the water. My hair cannot take even one rinse in the shower. When I lived with my aunt and uncle here in Vegas they had a filter and a softener, my hair was better then. -Kim

I am a Stylist & I am SURE its just from the Stress of moving!! Its Normal! Its called Alopecia or hair loss
Try These Tips:
Reduce your intake of pro-inflammatory foods (saturated fats, dairy products, and other animal products) and eat more fresh vegetables, whole grains, essential fatty acids, and, in particular, protein (non-animal sources of protein include nuts, legumes, and soy).
Biotin (300 mcg per day) and trace minerals, such as those found in blue-green algae (2 to 6 tablets per day), help hair growth.

...in the meantime while your waiting to find a BOMB stylist...use Motions shampoo and conditioner...it adds moisture into the hair which ethnic hair needs, especially in dry, hot climates...I think the climate is zapping your hair's moisture and the hair feels brittle because it's extremely dry...also try Queen Helen's Cholesterol...buy products targeted toward your hair type and remember that ethnic hair NEEDS moisture...(did you move from somewhere with a completely different climate...)

It is very dry there, perhaps the sudden change in climate has affected your hair.
I know when I go inland, away from the coast, my skin dries right out, together with everything else. I can't stand it.
