Aerowrite is 100% correct. Hail is a strange thing and it can cause major damage to your neighbor and no damage at all to your house. We had a major hail storm a few years ago and there was no hail damage to our roof. Others had damage but it depends on the age of your roof, the angle the hail was coming down, the angle of your roof. Also with a hail damage claim the company will pay for new shingles for the ones that have been damaged. Let's say the adjuster goes up and there are 5 shingles that have hail dents. The adjuster is going to pay for 5 new shingles. The roofing contractor is ALWAYS going to tell you you need a new roof. They are sales people and they don't want to patch up a roof, they want to do a whole new roof for you.
Call State Farm and ask them to have another adjuster come out and inspect your roof. They will send out another adjuster and make sure you are there with him. He will be able to show you the hail dents so you can see what is damaged.

Ah yes...what adjusters call "neighboritis" You see other people getting new roofs and so you think you are entitled to one too! First of all..weather is a crazy thing. Sometimes a tornado will come and tear all the houses down on your street and leave one standing. Its the same way with hail. Some roofs get pounded on, other roofs don't take much of a beating. Plus, different roof coverings are made to withstand weather differently. For example...say your neighbor has a 20 year roof and its older than yours. Lets say yours is a new 30 year roof. Your 30 year is designed to take hits before getting damaged. And if yours is newer, it may also survive better. The point I am making is that you cannot compare apples to apples.
And secondly...you contractor is a salesman!!! He's gonna tell you that you need a new roof! He wants to sell one to you! A lot of contractors talk crap about insurance companies, but trust me...they don't know what really goes on. Its so much easier to pay a claim than it is to deny it. Most adjusters hate denying a claim. Its not a state farm issue. Its whether or not they see NEW hits on the shingles and soft metals. Plus, just because you have hits, doesn't mean you'll get a whole new roof. If its new, and there isn't that many hits, your policy owes to fix it before replacing it.
I would call the local office and just ask for a reinspection and have your roofer present so that the adjuster and can work out the differences.

State Farm has announced that it will not write any new policies in Mississippi because of the lawsuits against it after Katrina. Apparently, State Farm has very carefully worded policies and they stick to the letter of that wording.
By the way, State Farm is NOT in financial trouble. They made a record profit in the 2005 hurricane year -- despite high insurance payouts.
Do you have wind coverage, as well as water coverage, as well as "severe weather" coverage? If you don't have the right combination of coverages to handle all the ways the damage could have happened to your roof, you could be in for a lawsuit yourself. In the Katrina cases, State Farm is arguing that the damage is the result of "storm surge", and since so many houses (that were damaged by the hurricane) were later flooded as a result of storm surge, they have used that to deny claims saying everything is a result of storm surge.
While this may have been true for some claims, in my opinion there is a lack of integrity in how State Farm has been operating. Also, if people buy hurricane insurance, but will need several other types of coverage to really be protected, why weren't they warned upfront? If I had purchased hurricane insurance, I'd certainly think I was covered for any damage as a result of hurricane -- including storm surge.
This isn't personal experience, but I know that my parents had problems with a claim to State Farm. That was over 20 years ago, but it would seem that their approach may not have changed. My parent's claim was legitimate -- they are very honest people -- and it was automatically denied. They needed to get a lawyer.
It's a sad thing, but the only "service" that I know of, where you have paid for it upfront, and then are in an antagonistic situation as soon as you actually *require* the service, is insurance.

I won't comment on the solution to your problem, as I'm not a property & casualty agent, and many in this forum are. I can, however, inform you that State Farm is rated A++ by AM Best; so you can be assured that if they are dealing with any financial issues, they are most certainly stable and solvent.

State Farm is in serious financial trouble. They insured waaay too many people for really cheap (that's why they were the biggest insurer of personal lines) but now its come back to haunth them. There have been numerous problems with State Farm in the news in the past few months. Thousand upon thousands of people are having trouble with them. I hope you get your situation straightened out. As soon as you do, drop them and go to someone else.

I personally think they freaking suck. They canceled me on auto insurance when I was a petty office 2nd class two young girls and a wife that had to drive while I was on deployment. They said it was because of my age . i had never had an issue no tickets, nothing. They are as corrupt as their main democrap hilliary the military hateing *****. Hilliary ruined two Airforce enlisted men's careers over a shop rag accidently left on Airforce one.My motherinlaws is 84 years old and her my father in law is deceased. The state farm people take advantage of the elderly and despise the military just like Hilliary the bull dyke clinton or should i say clitoris eater. She attacked muslim womens baby trying to eat it from her womb. That women was married to a pervert ex congressman from Ney york .

Did you have your roof inspected for hail damage or turn in a claim for hail damage? It's hard to answer this question without more details.
