What is the etiquette for gifts at a going away party? What is an appropriate gift?

She's not that great of a friend. She's not a confidant or anything, but she is in my circle of friends. There is a going away party for her on Saturday.

that would be nice but i would recommend cash or gift cards. do you think she really wants another thing to pack and move. a gift card to a target or macy's where she can get things she would like for her new home. spend what you can afford, no need to go crazy. you also might want to include some stationary so you can write back and forth or an address book where all her friends can put their contact info.

Why should you be concerned with etiquette. It's you friend. Besides, if you are hesitating. Then I guess you are not as close as you would like to believe. As to what kind of gift. It is a no brain-er. The gift should signify your friendship and when the person looks at. It should remind them of you ie. a picture of the two of you at a special place or moment in a nice frame for starters.

How close of friends were you?

You should get her a gift that she can use in her new house, and something she will remember you by. Make it something that shouts your name out, but something she would also like. In a way, the gift is both personal and impersonal, so it would work out fine. A brightly colored lamp or something, or maybe bedsheets! Just something fun, so that she knows she is going to be missed.

If the party is paid for by the people who throw the party, then that's the gift.

If you want to give her something, do so. If you don't feel like it, then don't.

Gifts are something that are given voluntarily. It's become a silly misconception that a present is obligatory.

Yes, that would be nice.
Something impersonal, like a bowl, small tray, vase, etc.
