Tailgaters are my biggest pet peeve. They are dangerous. When I am going the spped limit with 10 cars ahead of me on a two lane road...I can't go any faster!

I have to say I have smiled through these answers. It was good to see that the majority of you were wise to just move over. I am guilty of the touching my brakes and shaking my finger (not the middle one). I thank you. Loved the older lady who was not in a hury and the one who said move over and let him by.I think I will try to be a little calmer but I can't move over on the road I travel every am. One lane, no shoulder.

My wife does that and I won't ride with her anymore, Pis-ses me OFF. Pull over and let them around, that;s what I do. I'd rather loose 1 minute getting back on the road than 2hrs going over what happend when they slammed me, then the hassle of repairs and he said she said bla bla bla. Just let them around and leave the lesson giving to someone else.

Don't slam on your brakes! It is not worth risking an accident, damage to your car, personal injury, and all the hassle with calling the police, and dealing with insurance! (Chances are, if you do get in an accident, the other driver will throw a screaming fit because he has serious road rage issues...)

The only thing you can do is slow down to above the minimum speed(say, about 50mph). Sometimes, drivers will get the message that you do not feel safe, and they are violating your personal space, usually they eventually just get frustrated and merge left. Do not speed up again until they have backed off, or passed you. If you don't feel like slowing down, just merge right and let him pass, It is OK if the other guy eventually wrecks his car, just as long as he doesn't wreck yours. Let the tailgater teach himself a lesson, or the police.

I do one of three things (or a combination):

1) Flip them off (of course).

2) Slow down even further (this really drives them nuts - especially if they can't get over to get around you) Find a slow car and match speed with it. If they do get a gap to get over, start to ease over into the other lane too.

3) Grab the emergency brake - on my car it locks up the back two wheels without turning the brake lights on - absolutely hilarious to watch the look on someones face.

Caution - 'road rage' people sometimes don't take kindly to being flipped off, or nearly forced into rear-ending you. Make sure you are ready to deal with the consequences of your actions. I have had people chase me a few times, but none of them had the guts to get out when I finally decided to stop.

Just maintain your speed and try to ignore it. Don't slam on the brakes, that will just cause an accident. If its really bad, pull over and let them pass.

Switch lanes (or pull over if it's a one lane road) and let them pass.

Pick a day when you're not in a hurry and drive miles below the speed limit. WHEN he gives you room, then speed up.
