i sent it wednesday morning at 11ish from banbury oxfordshire by 1st class

As has already been said - it depends where it was posted from, and whether it caught that day's collection. In theory it should get there the next day with a 1st class stamp, but it's not guaranteed!

If you posted it within the British isles using a first class stamp it should arrive the following day.

Depends where you sent it from. But if you sent it first class from anywhere within the UK, it should be there the next day.

first class = 3 days. Occasionally one day.
