Plant eating animals have an organ called the caecum, which processes plant cellulose (Koalas, for example, which live entirely one eucalyptus leaves, one of the roughest and most fibrous leaves there is, have an enorous caecum).

As we humans evolved, and stopped eating so much raw plant cellulose (which comes from raw grass and leaves), our caecum shrank until it became the entirely useless organ we call the appendix.

Appendix plays a role in your immunity (your body's defense system). Basically it helps in the production of B (producers of antibodies) and T (producers of macrophages and natural killers) lymphocyte cells. Most of it function is done during childhood and it can be removed when complicated (thankfully most of the time when it is not essential, i.e. after childhood) because there are other organs/parts in your body that can compensate the lack of it.

Chances are, there used to be some reason for humans to have an appendix, and its function was either been rendered unnecessary or some other organ or system was able to handle its function better.

It definitely doesn't sound 'intelligently designed'.

For a long time it was thought to be a vestige from evolution, but lately it's been claimed to be part of your immune system.

Firstly... wrong spelling: appendix is correct. You as a human don't need one. For animals which eat grass or leaves, yes, they need it, in fact theirs is not as small as yours. They need it do digest the grass and leaves they have eaten.
