I am with jemima.
The idea that a loving, merciful god would burn people for eternity in a fiery hell, is just plain incomprehensible.

My beliefs are rooted in my culture and reinforced by my Christian upbringing. I am therefore not sectarian and call myself Christian but can relate with everybody that believes life was created and the essence of all life is love. I believe we shall all reach understanding of ourselves and origin in our own time and be unified with the source (life itself). I guess I am not what the popular definition of Christian means so I tend to say I am a universal believer and know of a loving God who will never damn or judge His creation harshly. I have a lot of questions and I am glad that I know where to look so far: within me, in others, around me and in everything I touch and do. Tomorrow will take care of itself I say.

Since sin, man is carnal. Eternal life, Salvation, is a gift from YHVH. You can get it nowhere else. He offers it through His Son the Messiah YAHOSHUA. If you can only get bread at a certain store, you really can't fault the hardware store because they don't carry it, can you? If you insist on remaining attached to your sins (whether they are large or whether they are small) then you will be where they are, and they will be in the purifying fire that cleans this earth so YHVH can make it new, and very good. It won't be YHVH's fault, He has done everything He can to save you!

--Your point is interesting and contains some logic--As to God's forgiveness, that has to be based on something other than sentimentalism.
--As far as this hellfire, threat that is so easily used in this category, it is an outright perverted idea--Jehovah God is not the Inquistor of the Spanish Inquisition --that used that doctrine as an excuse to burn people alive!
--As for excusing people because they want to have a convient religion of some sort, that indeed does not wash with God.-
----Please note, the serious action that will be taken, for those of us who do not like the idea of a God of substance and personality during the situation of armaggedon:
(2 Thessalonians 1:6-10) “6 This takes into account that it is righteous on God’s part to repay tribulation to those who make tribulation for YOU, 7 but, to YOU who suffer tribulation, relief along with us at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with his powerful angels 8 in a flaming fire, as he brings vengeance upon those who do not know God and those who do not obey the good news about our Lord Jesus. 9 These very ones will undergo the judicial punishment of everlasting destruction from before the Lord and from the glory of his strength, 10 . . .”
---2 types referenced---Those who do not know God(because they refuse to) & those who do not obey--His teachings and that of his Sons--they are not unreasonble!
--Sitting on the pereneal fence is a very dangerous place to be, especially in relation to God:
(James 1:6-8) “. . .But let him keep on asking in faith, not doubting at all, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven by the wind and blown about. 7 In fact, let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from Jehovah; 8 he is an INDECISIVE(my caps) man, unsteady in all his ways.”
(James 4:17) “17Â Therefore, if one knows how to do what is right and yet does not do it, it is a sin for him.”
--The confusion comes from either belief in false doctrines of religion or perhaps sheer stubborness! Some claim that their unbelief is resolutness, but there is indeed nothing noble about atheism! To be resolute is the act of being solid for good, righteous or upright things not a convience for a certain life-style!

there is a school of thought that does say that, all those who, even though they have not taken a deliberate stand against god, are slated for destruction. BUT, they do not teach that the punishment will be eternity in a burning hell. The punishment is that they will cease to exist.

I don't think God really cares if people believe in him or not. What I think he's really interested in is how you live your life. Some people claim to worship God but hate anybody that's different, while some people who don't believe in God can be the most kind, generous people you'd every meet.
As long as you live your life to its fullest, as long as you manage to make people happy, as long as you love and are loved in return, God can't hate you, or send you to hell. He just can't. There's no way.

God is both good and evil:
Isaiah 45:7 (King James Version):
I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.

there are indeed 2 sides. the one [good] is when you act by unconditional love, empathy...etc and the other one [bad] when you are jealous, acting bad, feel greedy..etc
love is not a choice, is a way of life. there is NO such thing as middle way but it is hardly to do with ''God'' thing..
But anyway, if there is black and white, who wants to be grey?

There's not just two sides...There's an entire spectrum in between..."If you're not with us, you're against us" is political rhetoric that (hopefully) God is above...
