Birds feet are so designed that they tighten as they come down onto a perch causeing the toes to curl around the perch. This done by a tendon that runs across the sole of the feet. The heavier they sit on the perch the tighter the grip so that they cannot fall of the perch if they are balanced. When a bird starts to fly it lightens the load on its feet so that they let go and it takes off.

Funny you should mention this. Yes, birds do sleep. Yes, uncoordinated birds can fall off, but it's rare. When I was a child, we had a lovebird that was born with only one foot. Every now and then, he would raise the wrong leg (leaving his stub to hold the perch) thus falling off onto the floor. He would always pop up and look around as if to say "I meant to do that" and go eat something out of his dish.

They do sleep. When most birds perch, the way their legs bend, actually causes their toes to lock around whatever they are perched on. They have to extend their legs to unlock the toes and let go before they move. Pretty ingenious survival mechanism...

of course they sleep! Their toes curl round the perch in a vice like grip and they bend down, making it neat impossible for them to fall.

they do sleep, but the have a special nerve in there leg which causes the feet to grip while they are asleep. a lot of birds stand on one foot while they sleep.

Yes, they sleep. They have the ability to 'lock' their claws onto the branch, so they are perfectly safe on the branch. A rather intelligent design, isn't it?

Sometimes they do fall off while sleeping but they can fly so they can catch theirself and fly before they hit the bottom. I have seen my budgie do this before.
