The combination of unfermented sugars and chemicals and alcohol can release adrenalin.

i dont think it is what you drink that is keeping you awake, but why you are drinking it.... for instance, sometimes when i have a day off, i know that i am going to drink a little more than usual, so while i am drinking, i feel energetic thinking that some wonderful thing might happen.... if i am down about something and drinking, then i think about too damned much stuff and cant go to sleep... that is when you drink to pass out... this is all learned behaviour, so be cautious how and who you learn from.... hope this info helps

a single glass of wine is thought to relax you. however, it sounds like "some" wine is much more than one glass... just keep in mind that alcohol, in and of itself, is a stimulant not a depressant. technically any drink with alcohol could keep you from getting a restful nights sleep, even if drunk until passing out.

This is not a joke- but i actually find it difficult staying awake. Maybe if you drink it is because you are wound up over something and rather than indulge in a stimulant such as alcohol, you need something to make you sleep such as warm milk and toast etc and a good comedy dvd before hand to keep your thoughts happy.
