I think student fees fund an important part of getting the most out of college. It allows the students to create associations of similar interest and funds a large number of assistance and access programs for students with special needs.
The best part about fees is that the Supreme Court has upheld the fact that they must be used regardless of how the person in charge of spending the money feels about an issue. For example, if the student government allocates the fee they cannot deny funding to any single cause based on any sort of political, philosophical, or moral objection. When I was in student government we used this ruling on Southworth V. The Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System to make sure we had the funding for our less mainstream theater group to go ahead with a controversial play. At the same time, we were funding the groups that protested the play. The debate events that took place added greatly to the discussion in my literature and political science classes and around campus in general.
When used correctly, the student fees should elevate the level of discourse on campus and provide for many opposing viewpoints to share their side of things. This benefits all students even if only indirectly - even if only because many of these groups look out for the interest of all students and not just their active members. If it is being used improperly to only fund certain viewpoints, there are grounds for legal remedy. It is important for students to realize the fee is THEIR money, collected by the university for the students' use as THEY, the students, see fit. Student groups fought for a long time to have that right but it must be exercised to be successful.

I think it's unfair to ask for one--it allows those who can afford it to participate more than those who cannot.

You shouldn't have to if you are not going to attend any activity.
