Jenn...check out the sights I listed below they are very informative for the medical as well as scientific aspects.. as to how DS affects their life: because most children born with DS have some form of developemental delays this can sometimes affect their gross motor and fine motor development. children with DS suffer from low muscle tone, meaning that they are sometimes a bit weaker than a other children and have looser joints on the average they begin walking around 2 1/2 yrs, though it can be sooner, as with any individual, kids with DS vary in their skills and development. speech is another area that is quite significant. down syndrome kids usually have a larger tongue and a shallower pallet making it difficult to keep their tongues in their mouth; also this larger tongue causes difficulty with speech resulting in communication problems with others and this sometimes leads to frustration, especially temper tantrums in young kids.
there has yet to be any form of classification for determining the different levels of development in DS. so all are lumped into one classification. DS kids are different just like you and I. so not all developmental delays or physical characteristics need to be present.the only thing they all have in common is an extra 21st chromosome.
another way DS effects their life is they hold a child like innocence their entire lives. this means they are unaware of the harshness of the world, they accept it for what it is and are happy. they don't know what the word hate is because they accept all whom they meet with a compassion and acceptance that is generally not found in other parts of society, and because of this they are "teachers" to those of us whom they meet.
I really wish the "general public" would not stereotype DS. all these people are different in their abilities, just like you and I. they have goals, dreams and they love.....they are human beings.
if you have any specific questions you can email me and I would be happy to help! good luck on your project.

Down syndrome is caused by trisomy (having 3 copies of a specific chromosome rather than 2) of chromosome 21. Usually this is by simply having an extra copy, though sometimes there is an extra portion of chromosome 21 attached to one of the other chromosomes. It affects mental function, lifespan, has some 'typical' physical features, and many associated medical conditions, including increased risk of specific heart abnormalities, neck bone abnormalities, and others.
There are many excellent webpages with information. I've attached two below.

that's spelled down syndrome. regrettably it incredibly is incorrect. The circumstance became into got here across by ability of johnathan down and named after him so it belongs to him giving the syndrome the appostrafy s. So it is going to be Down's Syndrome yet all scientific text fabric will spell it devoid of the s.
