Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Bake yams for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. When they are done, they will be very soft in the center, and you will see liquid from the potato oozing out and charring. When the potato is sliced open, the inside of the skin will be charred black from the caramelizing sugar in the potato. This is a perfectly cooked potato.& yes I believe the microwave is just as good......... Try it for 25-30 mins........on high

the time will depend on the size and number of the potatoes. 350f for 45 minutes to 1 hour should do the trick. roasting this way in the oven makes for a sweeter sweet potato, since the dry heat helps in the caramelization process of cooking. the microwave is fine, and timing will again depend on the size & number of potatoes - check them every 4-5 minutes to see if they are getting soft. microwaved sweet potatoes cook in moist heat, and wont be as sweet & tasty as when cooked in the oven.
alternatively, cook the sweet potatoes in the microwave for 5-7 minutes, then put into a 350f oven for 10-15 minutes to caramelize.

The way I have always baked them is in the oven. I grease the sweet potato put it on a cookie sheet and bake in a 350 degree oven for about 45 minutes. The skin will peel right off and they sure are good. I like cinnamon butter on mine.
