If you don't know what your doing it's a bad idea to clip you little friend. You could cut him/her or cause other injuries. If this happens you not only run the risk of a vet call, but also your dog my become frightened of grooming and give you all kinds of heck just brushing or clipping nails. I have five dogs, two of which require clipping. This can get very expensive. I called my groomer (which is associated with my vet) and asked if I could stay with my dog while she was being clipped to see how they did it. After offering a large tip for allowing me to watch, I spent the afternoon with the groomer and learned from a professional how to go about clipping my dogs. Every once in a while I take them back to be clipped (usually around Christmas, and again tip the groomer well) but the rest of the year I do it myself and save a ton of money and hassle taking them to a professional.

Unfortunately, unless you're trained in dog grooming, I wouldn't recommend that you cut your puppy's hair. There are a few breeds (poodles, for instance), that have to have "hair cuts" just like humans. If you want to learn to cut your dog's hair, perhaps you can find a local course on dog grooming, or perhaps even pay a dog groomer to teach you how to do it yourself. Good luck!

There are courses you can sign up for that will teach you to properly cut your dogs fur. But if you don't care about how it looks, you can just use a pair of electric clippers which you can buy at any pet store.

Take it to a groomer and watch how they do it. Ask what kind of products to use like clippers and shampoo. I would get them to do it a few times until you feel comfortable doing it yourself.
