Children pick up languages quickly...I think if she learns before she's 13 she could even learn how to speak it without any accent. Spanish is very important in the US due to the large Latino communities, and in the entire world (90% of Latin America, Spain, etc.)....I think learning Spanish would only benefit her. She could learn Spanish and maybe a Slavic language. Knowing more than 1 language would only benefit her intellectually and open up doors for her.

Well, I'm French and studied English as first foreign language. In my school, we had no choice because some schools can't afford to offer 2 different languages as first foreign language.
I'm of Italian origin, yet I studied Spanish as my second foreign language because I could should between Spanish or German. I had no other choice!
Your origin has nothing to do with the choice of the school. Don't take it personally! They chose it because she's more likely to use Spanish (not Mexican, by the way!) than any other language in America.

Why not both?
I hope you are teaching her whatever slavic language is her own. In addition to that, Spanish will only be an additional asset in her life, broaden her horizon, increase her employment opportunities, and improve her thinking patterns.
In addition, at 5 learning a second or third language is easy and smooth. Why would you want to avoid that???

It is Spanish by the way, not Mexican.
Never stop your kid from learning whether a language or anything else. On the contrary, the world is getting more and more competitive every day and the more he/she knows the better.

It's Spanish, not Mexican! The department of education cannot accommodate for every language spoken; they teach one that would be more useful given the demographics of the USA.

Why not learn Spanish if it's available? Any learning and language skill is good. My son had to learn (really minimal) Spanish in 1st grade, and I think it helped him to enjoy language in general. He went on take German in high school and enjoyed that. I don't see it as a problem.

The language is Spanish and next to English, that is the most common language in the US. In high school she will have her pick from a wider variety of languages. If she learns Spanish at a young age, she will have an easier time picking up others such as Italian. If you want her to know another language....then teach her yourself.

Its Spanish. "Mexican" is an ethnic background not a language. In my opinion, Spanish is one of the most beautiful languages in the world! =]

She shouldn't. She should only learn a language SHE wants to learn. The School sounds like they are forcing her to speak Spanish to accomdate illegal aliens. Why she we (REAL Citizens) cater to them? If they want to come her legal or illegal at least learn English. After all, We wouldn't go to Poland and expect to work if we didn't know the language. I'd refuse your daughter to be taught spanish. Tell the school it's against your personal beliefs! Let the illegal immigrants learn OUR language.
