If you are young he is distant because he likes you back, and he is afraid you'll figure him out before he gets a chance to lie convincingly enough to get in your pants (the girls always cave to guys with an air of mystery). If you are older, it is because he doesn't like you that way and wants you to leave him alone, but sometimes he feels depressed (i.e. vulnerable) enough to let down his guard and share a bit. Or he is a dick who just throws you enough charm and insight every once in a while so when he drunk dials you at 1 AM you wouldn't find it too far of a reach to invite him over for "drinks".

Like allot of men, He's moody, Don't take it personally, it's just his nature. And what ever you do, don't think you can change it. Just let it run it's course and he'll be back to normal soon.

He might suffer from extreem mood swings............i suffer from that myself sometimes i just want to me on my own.......my advise is to not take it personal does not mean he does not like you.
