I don't really drink that much or do any illegal drugs and not glorifying it or anything but I was wondering since people natural for whatever reason like to alter their mind either by taking a substance(legal or illegal) or other activity that gives them a rush of energy I find it amazing of all the recreational substance our society chooses to take it got to be alcohol. We got substances such as cannabis, kava kava,st. johns wort, etc that is less harmful on the body and mind and rarely if ever causes violence unlike alcohol why can't we just legalise these substance but ban alcohol and classify it same category as cocaine, heroin, meth because I figure prohibition might actually work if we get society to accept the above substance as socially acceptabe drugs?

In terms of long term harm, I agree that alcohol and tobacco are much worse. But with LSD and Ecstasy, you can have the occasional rare freak out that causes significant brain problems. What puzzles me more is the fact that marijuana is illegal. MJ is relatively harmless compared to alcohol. I think it's basically just societal inertia. Regardless of what the science says, most people grow up thinking certain drugs are socially acceptable and that other drugs are the bad drugs or the hard drugs. (not saying that isn't true in some instances, like heroin, take a look at Amy Weinhouse, never heard of a recreational heroin user). And they don't usually question the division.

Do you realize that prohibition was a total loss? Anyway, I don't do any drugs and I rarely drink but I think EVERYTHING should be legalized. If people want to do it, let them. As long as they are only hurting themselves and no one else. If they are pregnant, or driving high or anything else stupid, I think that they should be thrown into an alligator and/or crocodile pit, with ham in their pockets and be forced to stay there for 10 hours. If they make it through unharmed then they are free to go. Maybe next time they wouldn't be so stupid...

I agree, I think alcohol is just as addicting and terrifying as heroin or meth. If you ever watch the show "Intervention" on A&E, they select junkies who do both. Drugs to speed them up and drinks to slow them back down. It's unbelievable to me. My mom's a recovering alcoholic, actually went to rehab for it, I think everyone with a drinking problem should be exposed to what life is really like living with an addiction.
Just like in the 20's, I doubt prohibition would help. Plus, it would cut me out of a job! (I work with wine).

I have to disagree. I worked in law enforcement fo 27 years and have dealt with the problems intoxicants cause in our society and making other drugs legal is not the answer. However, I think the effect alcohol produces is a major problem and that there are other substances, such as THC, that are easier to deal with. As for banning alcohol, well...we've tried that in this country and it didn't work then and it would't work now.

Prohibition was attempted before when those above listed substances were not yet illegal, and was fairly disastrous.
