Generally, the patrol cars, vans and 4x4s are pretty much standard although same may have a turbo added. We also use Mercs and Volvos and various other plain high performance cars for Roads Policing (traffic) and Tactical Firearms although they're still standard. They're just bought so they're quicker than the standard cars. The red cars as mentioned above, are Diplomatic protection and will generally only be seen in the Capital.

They use standard cars .They put out a request for tenders to dealers who usually provide at cheapest prices they can for the prestige of supplying the police. The only ones I have seen modified are stolen vehicle squads some had special peice fitted below so they could mount pavements whilst in pursuit without damaging undersides.
If you have seen red cars in London they are diplomatic protection cars and are armed units.Police cars do look faster than others because people see them porayed as going through red lights etc.Contrary to another answer this is caterered for in law as apolice officer in the UK can legally overule traffic signs and signals.

The cars that the Police use are exactly the same as the general public can buy.. in fact, old Police cars are stripped of their livery and lights etc, and sold at auction to the public. Police officers have to undergo rigorous training to allow them to drive Police cars and to give them the skills to drive at high speeds and when pursuing vehicles. The red Police cars and vans you have seen belong to the Diplomatic Protection Group (in London), who protect embassies and consulates and their staff.

Your answered question maybe it maybe down to extra training as a driver they look faster than other cars and when you see a blue light you stop but they are no faster believe me you get behind a car with the same capability's and with a blue light on you could go that fast one thing to remember a police car is no different to you they have to observe all rules of the road unless in an emergency situation as ambulances and fire engines the rules of the road is there for every one to follow and you can actually report a policeman or car if they break them rules to let police cars ambulances or fire engines say through lights is a curtsy Dave

Police cars are high performance if they are traffic cars or rapid/armed responce vehicles.Normal police cars are standard.
I'm an armed responce police officer and drive an unmarked Mutsi. My unit gets called out to very high grade/priority call outs that require an extremely quick responce.Though I do get called out to pursuits that involve serious or dangerous offenders or any armed incidents.Normal police officers in this country aren't armed so a fast responce is even more essential

I don't know what your talking about but when I was a cop the best police car at that time was the 1970 dodge with the 440 magnum engine, duel exhaust and boy did it sound bad. After that was the Ford with 460 interceptor engine, duel exhaust, and boy was it fast.
