Brazil Immigration?

Is anyone aware of the meaning of the word 'SPOUSE' in Brazil Immigration laws? Does it include a DEFACTO SPOUSE, or do you have to be married.
This is for a Temporary or Permanent Visa which grants a longer stay than the current Tourist Visa.

In Brazil a common law wife can obtain a temporary visa to live in Brazil if her compagnon has a permanent visa
