Everyone is recommending the museums, however they close at 5pm. A night tour of the monuments is beautiful. Old Town Trolley has a 2.5 hour trip around Capitol Hill, the monuments and the White House. It's called Monuments by Moonlight.
It leaves at 6:30pm (7:30pm in the summer) from Union Station. Combine that with dinner first in Union Station at the Center Cafe. It's a casual cafe with open air views inside the Grand Terminal under the restored dome. You'll have a great time.
DC, especially in the tourist areas, is quite safe at night....ignore those who say otherwise as they probably live in the sticks and haven't visited beyond their Eighth Grade class trip 15 years ago.

Depending on what you are interested in, there are numerous things to do here in DC. All Smithsonian museums are free, including the National Zoo. One thing to take advantage of is ice skating at the National Sculpture Garden. It is outside and only offered during the winter. It's about $10 for 2 hours of ice skating.

Don't forget about all the monuments, including the WWII new monument between Washington and Lincoln on the National Mall.

You can always check to see if the Kennedy Center has any free shows playing or if there are others at the National and Warner Theatres downtown.

Learn the metro system (rail) that way, if you want to visit any other area in the metro area (MD, VA, DC), all easily accessible by train. You can download a schedule on line. Sundays in the city are still pretty busy. There are some really nice restaurants, Kinkaides is awesome, great food, shopping attached to bar area of rest., piano player in lounge, nice bar too.

Check out the comedy clubs maybe for a laugh after such a serious museum visit?

Bring your warm clothes, it's really cold and icey here now!!!!!

If you get tired of the normal museums go to the spy museum. Its not a typical museum. A great restaurant is Matchbox. Its like 15 feet wide and is hip restaurant that has great brick oven pizza.
