most are derived from natural substances such as molds...penicillin is the prototype. Other are metabolic poisons, arsenic was once used this way.

Depends on the type, the two most popular penicillin, and erythromycin, are derived from certain types of mold. From penicillin they derive many different types of antibiotics, some of which are altered syntheticly.
