$600-700 CAN a month is decent and cheap for Toronto, it's actually pretty good.

The largest hotel in Canada is the Delta Chelsea. It's right downtown on Gerrard between Yonge and Bay. It's very clean and safe. The rooms are nice. You should be able to find something there for about $100 per night. Also in the same neighbourhood, on Carleton Street is Days Hotel and Conference Centre. The rooms are quite small. But, they're often available in the $85 - $100 range. For something with a bit more character you'd have to spend $100 - $150 per night. Try the Clarion on Sherbourne Street (a little out of the way, but within a 5 minute walk of the subway) or the Bond Place on Dundas, just east of Yonge. Enjoy Toronto! It's a great place to visit. But, I'm glad i don't live here. It's bad enough driving in every day to work.

There is a place in St Lawrence Market area a long term place, and they have a range of rooms and suites, starting at $45.00 and night, I know they do long and short term monthly rentals, I stayed there once for 3 month while waiting for my apartment to be repaired, (Fire Above and alot of water damage), but they have changed there name, but if you search Expedia for hotel rooms, they are listed ther, and you could get the info to call or email them about your needs.

The first link is a good place also, it is downtown near the theater distrcit and Chinatown, and near both Queen or Dundas St and the transit.

You should contact the University of Toronto. They rent dorm rooms during the summer months at their various colleges on the downtown campus--shared kitchenettes and bathrooms but clean and secure.

VERY unlikely, unless you were to take a room in a roominghouse or hostel. $600 is not at all unreasonable in Toronto.

I don't see how you can improve on what you've already found. Don't forget, the price is in Canadian dollars.
