The best way is simply to be honest and polite about it. Talk to her and let her know that he isn't interested in her romantically. No matter how she finds out, she is going to be crestfallen because she has built up hope and desires. However, if he tells her in a civil and heartfelt way, at least she now has a rock on which she can rest her feelings for him.
Now, after reading some of your other recent questions, it looks more like you are obsessing about this guy. Just go up to him and ask him. It will clear the air and you'll get your head back on straight.

I try to avoid a situation like this unless she's all in my face and/or advertising to other people that we may be an item. By not giving her any personal contact, she should get the idea that I'm not interested.
If on the other hand, she seems to be pushing for an answer I feel it necessary to just tell her point blank that I'm not interested. Not lie and say that I'm involved with someone else, just the truth. I don't have a girlfriend right not and I'm not even looking. So when my female friends try to "fix me up" with their friends, I tell them that I've been a boyfriend, I've been a husband, now I want to just be ME for awhile.

Sorry I'm not a guy but I hope you'll accept this answer coming from a woman.
As long as she is not asking you out don't worry about it, she'll get over it. But if she is then you have to be honest and tell her you only like her as a friend. BAM! See how easy that is guys?!

It's not about them hurting your feelings or not... It's about being honest! I'd much rather have someone tell me the truth then drag me along just cause they didn't want to hurt my feelings! Be tough Girl! Be with someone who wants to be with you!!!
